It's the first time Kaneki witnessing a ghoul in its beast form. He's pretty much lucky when Rize was about to eat him, a metal piles fall in and killed her right away. Badly wounded, but surviving, Kaneki wakes up in hospital realizing the doctor had transplanted Rize's body to save him. His nightmare, then, begins.
This synopsis is made base on what I just watch, as I never managed to read more than 10 chapters of the manga. I find every character is perfect, most actors are so convincing. Probably Kubonyan is a bit too old to be Kaneki, but he can show the half-human half ghoul emotion well, so I'm fine with that.
Deep inside me hoping Kubonyan looks cute, but this Kaneki guy is probably just want to throw out after finding out he's "mistakenly" turned into a half-ghoul. He must be cursing everyone: Rize, the doctor, but the most hated person is himself for being able to be lured so easily. You can't expect a bright smile from that poor man. So, I focus my eyes on Suzuki Nobuyuki that is so handsome with a white robe and cool act. I agree, the part when he trains topless is probably just a fanservice, but would you complain?
What I like most from this movie is the message. The ghouls never asked to be born as a ghoul, nor they wanted to live eating human flesh. But, that's the only way to survive. They even collect dead body instead of killing a human by themselves. Still, this way of living is seen abnormal by a human, thus they become enemies. This is what happens when you can't see from others' perspectives.
This gray area story is not for kids. So, millennial parents, don't bring your kids when watching this. (had to state it because I was watching with a mother who brought her 5 years old girl. And that girl kept asking with loud voice during the movie.)
