A year ago, Futaba's husband suddenly gone missing. As result, she has to close the family business, a bathhouse and works at a bakery to make a living for her and her daughter. Even though there are only two of them, Futaba always rises in high spirit. But, the daughter, Azumi doesn't do well at school. She often gets bullied to the point that going to school is a torture. Futaba doesn't let Azumi falls into despair and pushes her to face her demon.
One day, Futaba is diagnosed by stage 4 cancer. Realizing she has not much time left, she starts to pull everything together. First, bringing her husband back. The loser is actually live in next town with another woman. A few years ago he had one-night affair and the woman got pregnant. Last year the woman introduced him to his daughter and begged to live together. However, she escaped a month later, leaving the husband taking care of the 9-year-old girl. Second, Futaba is reopening the bathhouse. With four people in the household, they surely can divide the work. Third, Futaba is going to introduce Azumi to her real mother in Hokkaido.
This movie is full of abandoned children. But, as long as there's a good hand to catch them, they'll be able to move on and carry a good life. One abandoned kid knows the pain of others, therefore she could do things to help them.
Oh, one point interesting to me is the way Futaba handles Azumi's bullying episodes. Instead of letting her running from her hell, she pushes forward. Not giving her chance to think she can escape her problem without a fight.
I actually have a colleague with a daughter suffered from bullying. The healthy girl becomes so dependent and the parents give her everything to ease her pain. She consulted the teacher, the school, with no avail. As result, the daughter refuses to go to school and my colleague has to find her another school. She's now having psychological therapy to build her relationship with people. The psychologist said she needs a father figure, thus her father must maintain close term with her. The problem is the father is not reliable enough to steal his daughter's heart. He's a bit indifferent and from the way my colleague describe, is not supporting enough. My colleague often comes in tears.
I say it's about confidence. You can be ugly or poor, but if you have confidence you can survive.
