The great commander of Pei suffered heavy wound after his battle with General Yang. He failed to reclaim Ying City, yet becomes very weak. He lets his shadow, a young man with similar face and age, to replace him carrying on his ambition. This man is fresh and obedient, but really pitiful.
Zhang Yi Mou brings a beautiful monochrome style I've never seen before. Most of the scenes are under the rain, giving melancholic shade to the gloomy story. Despite the plot is quite simple, the representation makes it turn away.
Deng Chao plays 2 characters: a dying commander and a strong shadow. Although the graphic is superb when showing both characters on the same scene, we can't ignore Mr. Chao's ability to skillfully switch from one character to another.
But, this is not about Deng Chao, the commander or the shadow. It's actually about the Madam who turns pity into sympathy. Slowly she becomes attracted to the vigorous husband replacement and he feels the same way. Although her husband realizes her change of feeling, he chews it himself. The commander sees the bigger picture: he needs the shadow to fulfill his dream.
