everyone who came here with a problem, they already knew the answer.
But, if they don’t even try, nothing I write will help them
Three orphans, Ah Jie, Tong Tong, and Xiao Bo take shelter in an old shop. They never imagine stepping into a magical building. As soon as they enter, they found a letter signed in 1993, asking for advice. It seems the old owner has been offering advice to confuse people. Those who can't decide easily and needed someone to reinforce their choices.
At least 3 people wrote a letter asking for advice. First, a young man aspired to be a musician but even after coming to Beijing, he still couldn't break through. Xiao Bo and Tong Tong decide to write a reply to him. At the beginning, they want to knock him to face reality. But, after corresponding to few letters, they begin to reinforce him to believe in his dream. He might never make it, but his song lives through another artist.
The next one is a child who had raised with the silver spoon but tragically lost his parents due to a car accident. Mr. Namiya advised him to be grateful for his family. He ends up living in an orphanage and becomes a famous painter because of the support.
There's also a woman who's supporting her family by working as a hostess. Ah Jie explodes reading this because he was born from a hostess mother and not knowing which scoundrel is his father. Soon after they found out her pure intention, they lead her to take a business class and make fortune during bubble era.
It seems to me that Jackie Chan is the main attraction here. He plays old weak uncle, unlike his notable portrays before. And he's not bad doing this. He really looks like a nice compassionate elder. But, for the three young orphans, hmmm...are not convincing enough. Although they're rising star in China recently, it's not easy to play characters acting like these. Perhaps in next few years.
Still, Chinese won't waste a chance to use computer graphics. They create magical appearance so smooth, making beautiful visual in connection scenes before time described. However, the use of CG can turn a serious movie into relaxing and comical one.
I don't know why they choose to produce this movie at the similar time with the Japanese adaptation. It doesn't make a healthy competition. According to the number this movie gains $22,859,584 worldwide, while the Japanese' Namiya got $34,670,000.
