The Devotion of Suspect X

A dead body with a smashed face and broken fingerprints is found in the levee. Police identify him as jobless Fu Jian, a man who's been divorced for having a gambling issue. Detective Luo Miao suspects the ex-wife, Fang Meng, has something to do with the case. However, she shows solid alibi.

Luo Miao consults his friend, Assistant Professor Tang Chuan who's been helping police cracking a lot of case. Their inquiry leads to Fang Meng's neighbor, Shi Hong. To their surprise, Shi Hong was Tang Chuan's classmate. He's a genius, devoting his life to solve math problems. They've been challenging each other when they were students. Now after 16 years, Shi Hong is a gloomy high school teacher while Tang Chuan builds his reputation prominently.

If Shi Hong did help Fang Meng dealing with the murder, then it won't be easy to prove it. This is obviously a challenge for Tang Chuan!

Half of the movie follows the plot of the original novel. But, I don't remember reading our handsome assistant professor and the mathematician going on a hiking date. Ah.

The cinematography matches the gloomy story. The director shows dark shade here and there, putting more contrast to the screen.

However, the main attraction here is-of course- our beloved Wang Kai. Dressed in a retro suit and smooth hair, he looks awesome. I don't have the courage to compare him with Massha. Massha has been Yukawa-sensei for so long, the image of him sticks. But, Wang Kai's is also interesting. Since it has limited time length in the movie, they don't show a lot of Yukawa (Tang Chuan)'s flaw, so he's able to maintain a cool image. XD
