Muramoto Aiko-sensei is assigned as homeroom teacher for class 5-2. Students call her "Gappa sensei" because she introduced herself using the phrase of Ishikawa's dialect "Gappa" which means "I'll do my best".
As a young teacher, she's trapped between being a friendly figure for the students and trusting individual for their parents. Vice Principal often scold her for unfit manners. He even does it in front of the students that it's getting hard for Aiko to gain charisma.
The class is going to participate in this year's sports festival. They choose to join long rope jumping competition. While they aim to win, the kids spot a boy who always fails at it. They decide to take him out to be cheering staff. But, is doing so make everyone satisfy? Gappa sensei have to help her students to come out with the best solution.
A story about rookie teacher overcome problems in teaching is nothing new. So, I'm not going to explore it here. It's enough to say this has a touching plot on how teacher brings the class together.
Aside from that teacher-student relationship, I'm more interested in Aiko's interaction with her mother. The mother had been raising her and her brother alone since the father passed away. They lived on a small island and Aiko left it to be a teacher in Tokyo. Burnt with school's problem, she finds her mother's affection to be annoying. She keeps receiving food packages when she totally has no time to cook. In order to make her happy, she always calls to thank. it's only obligatory act, she doesn't really want to share her problems with her mother. Because she doesn't want her to be a worry. I mean, even without sharing some thoughts, the old woman keeps thinking about her anyway.
This scenes can only be understood by people who had left home and find new world too amusing. You think you're an adult, that you need to be released from parent's "monitor". But, in reality, you're always a child. You think parents are annoying, then wait until you become parents.
