This year's NHK drama revolves around scholar named Yoshida Torajiro. He was raised to be intellectual and eventually becomes military teacher for Chosu Clan in Hagi. Torajiro's an enthusiastic learner that he travels across the country to learn. He also diligently reads about foreigner's advansion and worries on how Japan can defend themselves against the westerners.

It was around 1855 when Torajiro tries to meet Comander Perry in his black ship to get him taking him to America. But, the foreigner had treaty with Shogun, thus they send Torajiro to the land. Torajiro is then sent to prison as his action is considered a betrayal.
A year later he's given house confinement. That's where he starts attracting young men to learn politics.

It was Torajiro's sister, Fumi, who manages to keep his private school going. Fumi takes care of the school needs, as well as the pupil's consumption. Even as home prisoner, Torajiro aspires to defend the country and his ambition is shared among his pupils.

Torajiro family isa middle rank samurai and they're not rich. However, they value knowledge more than everything. Their house is full of books. Torajiro is an avid reader. He read 200 books just in two month of his prisoning. Wow. I'm so jealous. It's not easy to prioritise study over meal, right? This part of the story really touch me.

The boys are hot and crazy to get into debate. On the other hand, Fumi and other women are left to manage the kitchen. It might look natural in that era, but don't you think it's kinda unfair? Boys can strive for knowledge from am to pm. They don't bother to go home. It's because the women are taking care of the house for them.
It's okay when the women take it as their aspiration. but, is every woman wants to stay home and be 'maid'?
There's no excellent woman who strive for knowledge in this drama, so it fits well. But, if there was anyone like that, will she be able to pursue her dream as much as the boys?
