Hanamura Benio is what we call modern girl in this meiji era. She's strong, both mind and body. She's against political marriage. She believes woman can do the same work with man. Wow, she the emancipation pioneer at her time.

One day, her father asks her to go to Ijuuin's House to get ethics lesson. But, she's so surprised that she's not only get lesson but also a fiance. Ijuuin's grandmother had long dreamt of joining family with Hanamura. It was long time ago when she fell in love with Benio's grand father. But, they couldn't make it and promised that the next generations should be matched. Their children are all boys, then luckyly the grandchildren can be paired. Ijuuin Shinobu, the grandson, is a governmental second liutenant. He's handsome and popular with woman. He's kind to Benio that even she refuses the wedding, she starts to have a crush on him.

Then, the second liutenant is sent for war in Siberia...

Ah, I was expecting dramatic comedy movie just like in the manga. But, the plot is too flat. They're acting is quite stiff. I understand that this is Abe san's first movie. He looks very handsome there.
My favorite part from the manga is when Benio was about to marry Aoi Tosei. Suddenly, the church shoke and broke. People lost Benio, but the her hand came out of the ruin while saying, "Main character never die!" lol.
It's such an amazing manga. I lost all my tankoubon now. It's been years, that's why.
