So, I spent the whole Saturday watching #ThePavilion.
It's light-on series consists of 12 episodes only. No handsome young actor or exciting action, but this is a crime procedural drama. It's also a story about a family which lost a sister 19 years ago.
At that time, Xuan Zhu was the prettiest girl who was cheerful and loved by everyone. On the other hand, her twin sister Xuan Zhen is not as attractive. Even though Xuan Zhen has better academic achievement, she's gloomy & unsociable. On the day she was murdered, Xuan Zhen was waiting for her brother, Xuan Liang. But, the brother was late because he was on a date. He carries the guilt for 19 years.
Now his own daughter, Nianmei is 18, the same age when Xuan Zhu died. And she very much resembles her aunt. Xuan Liang is always worried that a similar incident could happen to his daughter. So, he keeps his eyes on her by always picking her up from school.
Still, he can't stop a rouge rich boy, Zhu Shenghui chasing her (and harassing her). It's like hell how he waits for Xuan Nianmei after school. Any girl would be scared, right?
(Despite his good look, that's not the way to chase a girl tho). But the boy found drowned, on the exact same spot as Xuan Zhu murdered. The similarity forces police to connect the cases and start questioning again people around them. Some new information is revealed.
This series is a bit slow for the first 8 episodes. It's a crime procedural drama after all. No genius suddenly appears to tip the cop. They rely on their meticulously collecting evidence. They should not assume, can only expect people to tell the truth.
But this is also a family story. A story about parenting style that results in sibling rivalry. Favoritism has caused the less attention kid to turn sour. I have always thought sibling rivalry was just jealousy among kids, which will fade as they grow up. It could happen to any family, usually with a lot of kids. Lovely-looking children are usually receiving more love. I've read that cute baby turn to be healthier than unattractive ones. Also, half of the life problems are solved for the good looking people.
But, I think we should have a clear understanding that pretty doesn't link to generosity, intelligence, and other traits usually dubbed to them. Yes, there are beautiful nice people, but some are just wolves in sheep's clothing.
I'm also reminded that family can be your ally, but also your foe. Your family could strengthen you, but could also destroy you. If you have a kid who never wanted to go home, don't label her. Ask yourself what have you done. It hurts to have a toxic family.
